Your privacy matters to us. This policy explains exactly what data we collect (almost nothing) and how MarkConvert protects your content.
Welcome to MarkConvert ("we," "our," "us"). We operate the website located at markdowntoconverter.com (the "Service"). This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your information when you visit our website and use our Markdown conversion tools. We are committed to protecting your personal privacy and handling your data with transparency. By accessing or using MarkConvert, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with the terms of this Privacy Policy, please do not access or use the Service. This policy complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and other applicable data protection laws worldwide. We encourage you to read this policy carefully and contact us if you have any questions about our privacy practices.
MarkConvert is designed as a privacy-first tool. We do not require you to create an account, provide your name, email address, phone number, or any other personally identifiable information to use our core Markdown conversion functionality. Your Markdown content — the text you paste or upload into our editor — is processed entirely within your web browser using client-side JavaScript. This content is never transmitted to our servers, never stored in any database, and never accessible to us or any third party. When you export a document (PDF, DOCX, DOC, or HTML), the file is generated locally on your device and downloaded directly. No copy of your document exists on our infrastructure at any point during or after the conversion process.
When you visit our website, certain information may be automatically collected through standard web technologies. This includes your IP address (which may be anonymized depending on your jurisdiction), browser type and version (e.g., Chrome 120, Firefox 115), operating system (e.g., Windows 11, macOS Sonoma, Android 14), referring URL (the page that linked you to our site), pages visited on our site and time spent on each page, device type (desktop, tablet, mobile), screen resolution, and language preference set in your browser. This information is collected through Google Analytics 4 (with IP anonymization enabled) and is used solely to understand aggregate usage patterns, improve website performance, and optimize the user experience. We do not use this data to identify individual users or build personal profiles.
MarkConvert uses a minimal number of cookies. We use one first-party cookie to store your theme preference (light or dark mode) in localStorage — this cookie contains no personal information and is never transmitted to any server. Third-party cookies may be set by Google Analytics for traffic analysis (these can be blocked by your browser's privacy settings without affecting tool functionality) and Google AdSense for displaying relevant advertisements (subject to Google's own privacy policies). We do not use tracking cookies, fingerprinting technologies, or any form of cross-site tracking. You can disable all cookies through your browser settings; the core Markdown conversion tool will continue to function normally without any cookies enabled.
The limited information we collect is used exclusively for the following purposes:
We do not sell, rent, lease, or trade your personal information to any third party for marketing purposes. We may share limited, anonymized data with the following categories of service providers who assist us in operating our website:
We may also disclose information if required by law, court order, or governmental regulation, or if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, protect your safety or the safety of others, investigate fraud, or respond to a government request.
We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect the limited data we handle. Our website is served exclusively over HTTPS (TLS 1.2+), ensuring all data transmitted between your browser and our servers is encrypted. We conduct regular security assessments of our website infrastructure. Our client-side architecture inherently provides strong data protection because your document content never leaves your device. We do not maintain a database of user documents, user accounts, or user profiles, which significantly reduces the attack surface and eliminates the risk of a data breach exposing your personal content. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security of the automatically collected browsing data described in Section 2.2.
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:
To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at the email address provided on our Contact page. We will respond to your request within 30 days, as required by applicable law.
For users located in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, we process personal data under the following lawful bases as defined by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Legitimate Interest (Article 6(1)(f)): We process anonymized analytics data based on our legitimate interest in understanding website usage patterns and improving our service, balanced against the minimal impact on your privacy given the anonymous nature of this data. Consent (Article 6(1)(a)): Where required by applicable law, we obtain your consent before setting non-essential cookies (such as advertising cookies). You may withdraw this consent at any time through your browser settings. Legal Obligation (Article 6(1)(c)): We may process data to comply with legal obligations imposed by applicable law. We do not transfer personal data outside the EEA unless adequate safeguards are in place, such as Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission. Our data processing activities involving Google Analytics and Google AdSense may involve data transfers to the United States, which are covered by Google's compliance with applicable data transfer frameworks.
For California residents, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) provide specific rights regarding personal information. Under these laws, you have the following rights:
To submit a CCPA request, contact us via the email provided on our Contact page. We will verify your identity before processing your request and respond within 45 days.
MarkConvert is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or 16 in the EEA). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under these age thresholds. Our Markdown conversion tool does not require account creation or personal information submission, making it inherently unlikely that children's data would be collected. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child under the applicable age threshold, we will take immediate steps to delete such information. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately so we can take appropriate action. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and equivalent international regulations.
Our website may contain links to third-party websites, services, or resources that are not operated or controlled by MarkConvert. These links are provided for informational purposes and convenience only. We do not endorse, review, or assume any responsibility for the content, privacy policies, security practices, or data collection activities of any third-party websites. When you click on a third-party link and leave our website, our Privacy Policy no longer applies. We strongly encourage you to review the privacy policy of every website you visit before providing any personal information. Third-party services referenced in our educational content (such as Pandoc, CommonMark, or various Markdown editors) are independent products with their own privacy practices.
Given our minimal data collection approach, our data retention practices are straightforward. Your Markdown content is never stored by us — it exists only in your browser's memory during your session and is discarded when you close the page. Theme preferences stored in your browser's localStorage persist until you clear your browser data or manually change the setting. Google Analytics data is retained for 14 months by default, after which it is automatically deleted from Google's systems. Server access logs (containing IP addresses and request metadata) are automatically deleted within 30 days. If you contact us via email, we retain your correspondence for up to 12 months to maintain context for ongoing support threads, after which it is permanently deleted unless a longer retention period is required by law.
MarkConvert is operated from and primarily serves users globally. If you access our website from outside the country where our servers are located, your browsing data (as described in Section 2.2) may be transferred across international borders. We ensure that any such transfers comply with applicable data protection laws by implementing appropriate safeguards, including Standard Contractual Clauses for transfers from the EEA. Google, as our analytics and advertising partner, maintains its own data transfer mechanisms compliant with applicable regulations, including its participation in relevant data privacy frameworks.
We reserve the right to update or modify this Privacy Policy at any time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page and, if the changes are significant, we may provide additional notice through a prominent announcement on our website. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically to stay informed about how we are protecting your information. Your continued use of the Service after any changes to this Privacy Policy constitutes your acceptance of the updated terms. If you disagree with any changes, you should discontinue using the Service immediately. Historical versions of this Privacy Policy are available upon request.
Some web browsers transmit "Do Not Track" (DNT) signals to the websites and other online services that the user communicates with. MarkConvert respects DNT signals. When we detect a DNT signal from your browser, we disable Google Analytics tracking for your session, ensuring that no browsing data is collected or transmitted to Google's analytics servers. The core Markdown conversion functionality is unaffected by DNT settings, as it does not involve any data collection or server communication. Note that some third-party services embedded on our site (such as Google AdSense) may not fully honor DNT signals — we recommend using browser-based ad blockers or privacy extensions if you wish to prevent all third-party tracking.
If you have any questions, concerns, or complaints about this Privacy Policy or our data practices, or if you wish to exercise any of your rights described in this policy, please contact us at the email address provided on our Contact page. We take all privacy inquiries seriously and will respond to your message within 30 days. For GDPR-related requests from EEA residents, our response time is 30 days as required by regulation, with a possible 60-day extension for complex requests (we will notify you of any extension within the initial 30-day period). For CCPA-related requests from California residents, our response time is 45 days as required by regulation.
